RESUMO

Zoonotic streptococci cause several invasive diseases with high mortality rates, especially meningitis. Numerous studies elucidated the meningitis pathogenesis of zoonotic streptococci, some specific to certain bacterial species. In contrast, others are shared among different bacterial species, involving colonization and invasion of mucosal barriers, survival in the bloodstream, breaching the blood-brain and/or blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier to access the central nervous system, and triggering inflammation of the meninges. This review focuses on the recent advancements in comprehending the molecular and cellular events of five major zoonotic streptococci responsible for causing meningitis in humans or animals, including Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus, Streptococcus suis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and Streptococcus iniae. The underlying mechanism was summarized into four themes, including 1) bacterial survival in blood, 2) brain microvascular endothelial cell adhesion and invasion, 3) penetration of the blood-brain barrier, and 4) activation of the immune system and inflammatory reaction within the brain. This review may contribute to developing therapeutics to prevent or mitigate injury of streptococcal meningitis and improve risk stratification.

RESUMO

Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of novel antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in treating epilepsy in patients with brain tumors (BTRE). Methods: A search was conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to February 2023, with English language restriction. Results: In this meta-analysis, 18 clinical trials involving 755 BTRE patients were included to assess the efficacy and safety of novel AEDs in BTRE treatment. At the last follow-up, a ≥50% reduction in seizure frequency was experienced by 72% of patients (random-effects model, 95% CI = 0.64-0.78) using novel AEDs. At the last follow-up, seizure freedom was experienced by 34% of patients (random-effects model, 95% CI = 0.28-0.41) using novel AEDs. The pooled incidence of AEs was found to be 19% (95% CI: 13%-26%), with a withdrawal rate due to adverse effects of only 3%. Comparable efficacy and incidence of adverse effects were observed between lacosamide and perampanel. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggests that novel antiepileptic drugs are deemed effective for seizure control in brain tumor patients, particularly when used as adjunctive therapy. Although lacosamide and perampanel received more focus in studies, no significant difference was observed in the efficacy and adverse reactions of these two drugs in seizure control. Further randomized controlled trials are deemed necessary to validate our findings.

RESUMO

The chiral pesticide hexythiazox was extensively employed in agricultural activities and has garnered growing concern for its harmful impact on the ecosystem. This study investigates the toxicodynamic earthworm at the enantiomeric level of hexythiazox. Earthworms exhibited notable enantioselectivity during the accumulation stage. Furthermore, the presence of earthworms can impact the rate of degradation and enantioselectivity of hexythiazox in soil. The accumulation of the two hexythiazox enantiomers in the earthworm adhered to the one-compartment model, whereas the elimination phase was governed by the first-order kinetics equation. Furthermore, it was discovered that there was no notable enantioselectivity observed during the elimination phase.

RESUMO

Based on the widespread application and under-research of mechanized preparation Cantonese soy sauce koji (MP), absolute quantitative approaches were utilized to systematically analyze the flavor formation mechanism in MP. The results indicated that the enzyme activities increased greatly during MP fermentation, and 4 organic acids, 15 amino acids, and 2 volatiles were identified as significantly different flavor actives. The flavor parameters of MP4 were basically identical to those of MP5. Furthermore, microorganisms were dominated by Staphylococcus, Weissella, and Aspergillus in MP, and their biomass demonstrated an increasing trend. A precise enumeration of microorganisms exposed the inaccuracy of relative quantitative data. Concurrently, Staphylococcus and Aspergillus were positively correlated with numerous enzymes and flavor compounds, and targeted strains for enhancing MP quality. The flavor formation network comprises pathways including carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and oxidation, and protein degradation and amino acid metabolism. In summary, the fermentation period of MP can be substantially shortened without compromising the product quality. These findings lay the groundwork for refining parameters in modern production processes.

RESUMO

Owing to their extraordinary photophysical properties, organometal halide perovskites are emerging as a new material class for X-ray detection. However, the existence of toxic lead makes their commercialization questionable and should readily be replaced. Accordingly, several lead alternatives have been introduced into the framework of conventional perovskites, resulting in various new perovskite dimensionalities. Among these, Pb-free lower dimensional perovskites (LPVKs) not only show promising X-ray detecting properties due to their higher ionic migration energy, wider and tunable energy bandgap, smaller dark currents, and structural versatility but also exhibit extended environmental stability. Herein, first, the structural organization of the PVKs (including LPVKs) is summarized. In the context of X-ray detectors (XDs), the outstanding properties of the LPVKs and active layer synthesis routes are elaborated afterward. Subsequently, their applications in direct XDs are extensively discussed and the device performance, in terms of the synthesis method, device architecture, active layer size, figure of merits, and device stability are tabulated. Finally, the review is concluded with an in-depth outlook, thoroughly exploring the present challenges to LPVKs XDs, proposing innovative solutions, and future directions. This review provides valuable insights into optimizing non-toxic Pb-free perovskite XDs, paving the way for future advancements in the field.

RESUMO

We propose an ultra narrow-band filter in the mid infrared region (MIR) using artificial metamaterials (AMM), which is suitable for the design of on-chip photonic spectrometers. 2-D rectangular holes with a cross-like layerout are adopted to enhance the filter's efficiency and precision. Considering the penetration depth of electromagnetic (EM) waves in the metal film, we opt for multi-layer films composed of metal layers and dielectric layers, instead of a single metal layer, to improve the structure's performance in the MIR. This multilayer configuration significantly enhances the efficiency and precision of the AMM structures in the MIR. The transmission peak, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 30 nm, can be achieved and tuned in the wavelength range from 3.0 µm to 10.0 µm by changing the periods of the unit cell (enlarging the unit cell from 3.0 to 10.0 µm). The proposed AMM structures, with tunable narrow band transmittance in MIR, exhibit promising potential in the fabrication of narrow band photonic detectors and on-chip spectrometers.

RESUMO

Dissipation, residue levels, and ingestion risks of carbendazim in peach (Amygdalus persica L.) were investigated with individual and joint applications in the present study. The dissipation kinetics of carbendazim, chlorpyrifos, prochloraz, and imidacloprid were evaluated by the first-order kinetics. When carbendazim was individually applied, the final residual concentration was 2.97 mg kg-1 and the half-life was 17.4 d. In the joint application of carbendazim with chlorpyrifos, prochloraz, and imidacloprid, the residual concentrations at 35 d after spraying were 7.16, 7.50, and 4.26 mg kg-1 and the half-lives were 30.8, 23.7, and 23.2 d, respectively, which showed an increase of 1.3-1.8 times compared with the single application of carbendazim. In addition, the effects of household processing of rinsing and peeling were investigated, and a high removal rate of 54.6% and 76.5% were found. Furthermore, the carbendazim ingestion risk assessment was conducted, which indicated that the acute health risk (aHI) and hazard quotient (HQ) of carbendazim were all within acceptable levels ranging from 21.7% to 40.9%. However, a higher ingestion risk of carbendazim was found under the joint application. This study provides some preliminary guidance for the joint application and risk assessment of carbendazim in peach, which is worth further investigation.

RESUMO

The meta-analysis aims to evaluate and compare the impact of the combination of stem cells (SCs) and light-based treatments (LBTs) on skin wound (SW) repair. Examinations comparing SCs to LBT with SCs for SW repair was among the meta-analysis from various languages that met the inclusion criteria. Using continuous random-effect models, the results of these investigations were examined, and the mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals was computed (CIs). Seven examinations from 2012 to 2022 were recruited for the current analysis including 106 animals with SWs. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBT) plus SCs had a significantly higher wound closure rate (WCR) (MD, 9.08; 95% CI, 5.55-12.61, p < 0.001) compared to SCs in animals with SWs. However, no significant difference was found between PBT plus SCs and SCs on wound tensile strength (WTS) (MD, 2.01; 95% CI, -0.42 to 4.44, p = 0.10) in animals with SWs. The examined data revealed that PBT plus SCs had a significantly higher WCR, however, no significant difference was found in WTS compared to SCs in animals with SWs. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised while interacting with its values since all the chosen examinations were found with a low sample size and a low number of examinations were found for the comparisons studied for the meta-analysis.

RESUMO

Taking advantage of broad response range and snap-shot operation mode, reconstructive spectrometers based on integrated frequency-modulation microstructure and computational techniques attract lots of attention. The key problems in reconstruction are sparse samplings related with the limited detectors and generalization ability due to data-driving principle. Here, we demonstrate abstractly a mid-infrared micro-spectrometer covering 2.5-5 µm, which utilizes a grating-integrated lead selenide detector array for sampling and a hierarchal residual convolutional neural network (HRCNN) for reconstructions. Leveraging data augmentation and the powerful feature extraction ability of HRCNN, a spectral resolution of 15 nm is realized. Over one hundred chemicals, including untrained chemicals species tested with an average reconstruction error of ∼1E-4, exhibit the excellent reliability of the micro-spectrometer. The demonstration of the micro-spectrometer promotes the development of the reconstructed strategy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the safety of perampanel in different disorders and doses. METHODS: Embase, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from inception to July 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The meta-analysis was performed by using Review Manager 5.3 and R 4.2.1 software. RESULTS: A total of 17 RCTs with 5711 subjects were included in the final analysis. The double-blind treatment phase was from 12 weeks to 48 weeks. Our results showed that 11 adverse events (aggression, ataxia, balance disorder, dizziness, fall, fatigue, irritability, rash, somnolence, vertigo, and weight increase) were statistically significantly associated with perampanel, and 4 of them (ataxia, dizziness, fatigue, and somnolence) showed a clear dose-response relationship. Psychiatric adverse events occurred most frequently among serious treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). At 8 mg/day, seven adverse events (aggression, balance disorder, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, vertigo, and weight increase) occurred more frequently in patients with epilepsy than in patients with other disorders, whereas dose discontinuation rates due to adverse events were lower in patients with epilepsy than in patients with other disorders. CONCLUSION: The safety profile of perampanel is dependent on diseases and dose. The risk of adverse events was statistically significantly higher, with doses exceeding 4 mg/day. Despite a higher risk of adverse events, patients with epilepsy had a lower perampanel discontinuation rate than patients with other disorders.

RESUMO

Enrofloxacin (ENR) and sulfachloropyridazine combined with trimethoprim (TMP) were commonly used in poultries to treat bacterial infections. In this study, the pharmacokinetics of these antibiotics in four tissues of Taihe black-boned silky fowls was studied. The results showed that these drugs were absorbed and distributed rapidly, with the highest concentration showing in skin. Meanwhile, ENR and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) and TMP were depleted slowly, particularly in skin with the elimination half-lives being 37.1, 36.9, and 72.7 days, respectively. It may be attributed to the abundance of melanin in skin. The dietary risk assessment suggested that the long-term dietary intakes of ENR, CIP, and TMP showed a considerable threat to human health. Based on the experiment, the withdrawal times of 284 days for ENR + CIP and 159 days for TMP were acquired, which showed that these drugs are not appropriate for the application in Taihe black-boned silky fowls.

RESUMO

A simple, rapid and sensitive vortex-assisted magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method using core-shell structured magnetic covalent organic frameworks (Fe3O4/COF-TpBD) as adsorbents was established for simultaneous determination of aflatoxins, ochratoxins and enniatins in maize before high-performance chromatography tandem spectrometry detection. Fe3O4/COF-TpBD was facilely fabricated, characterized, and applied for simultaneous extraction of ten mycotoxins from maize. Key parameters affecting MSPE efficiency were investigated. The method possessed good linearity (0.05-50 µg/kg), high sensitivity (0.02-1.67 µg/kg for limits of detection), and satisfactory recoveries (73.8-105.3 %), with relative standard deviations less than 8.5 %. The amount of adsorbent used (5 mg) and the time required (0.5 min each for adsorption and for desorption) for MSPE were greatly shortened in comparison with the previous reports. Therefore, the fabricated Fe3O4/COF-TpBD exhibited a great potential for rapid extraction of common mycotoxins in maize, which can be attributed to its multiple interactions with the target mycotoxins.

RESUMO

The isotropic and anisotropic component Raman spectra and H NMR of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)/carbon tetrachloride and NMP/methanol binary mixture at different volume fractions have been collected. The polarization Raman frequencies and frequency differences of CO stretching vibration for NMP/methanol mixture show unique concentration-dependence and abrupt jump feature. It is found that the H-bond between solute and solvent does not destroy the noncoincidence (NCE) phenomenon, but has a significant synergistic effect on the NCE. Two distinctive clusters constrained by H-bond and intermolecular interactions were easily determined by means of linear extension method from abrupt jump curve. The experimental phenomena can be well explained by aggregation-induced splitting theory with the proposed dimer structure and H-bond cluster model. Applying the same methodology the conformation of NMP in water has been determined successfully. The establishment of this method will play an important role in the determination of biomolecule aggregation behavior and supramolecular self-assembly structure.

RESUMO

Despite the important role of the genre awareness in facilitating the effective communication in the global business context and the need to teach and practice writing for various social purposes, there was scant classroom-based research on effects of providing peer feedback on EFL learners' genre awareness in business writing for fulfilling the particular communicative purpose. This study examined whether student reviewers could improve their genre awareness in business letter writing by providing peer feedback to other students' writings at varying levels. Sixty business English majors, taking the business writing course for 1 year under the tutelage of the same instructor, participated in the current study. They were randomly assigned to the experimental group who reviewed the students' drafts at different levels (high, medium and low) and gave written comments and the control group who received no treatment but did self-revision. Both groups followed the genre-specific evaluation criteria during peer feedback and self-revision. Repeated-measures ANOVA on the two groups' writing performances at different timepoints (pretest, immediate posttest, transfer posttest and delayed transfer posttest) demonstrated that the participants in the experimental group had better performance than those in the control group at the transfer posttest as well as the delayed transfer posttest. Moreover, providing weakness comments on both the low-quality and the medium-quality drafts had significant effects on their own writing quality at the subsequent tests, whereas providing strength feedback on the high-quality drafts had statistically significant impacts on their own writing quality at the immediate posttest and the delayed transfer posttest. However, multiple linear regression analyses demonstrated that only offering weakness comments to the medium-quality drafts could effectively predict the reviewers' overall writing quality in the immediate posttest, the transfer posttest, and the delayed transfer posttest. Tentative research and pedagogical implications of the findings were discussed.

RESUMO

Purpose: The present study aimed to establish and validate an isotope-dilution-UHPLC-MS/MS method for the determination of perampanel (PER) concentration and investigate the effect of eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) on the pharmacokinetics of PER in rats. Methods: The rats were randomly divided into the control (0.5% CMC-Na) and experimental groups (ESL, 72 mg/kg), with six rats in each group. A single dose of PER (1 mg/kg) was administered after a week of repetitive 0.5% CMC-Na or ESL dosing (72 mg/kg); then, plasma samples were collected. Perampanel-d5 (PER-d5) was used as the internal standard (IS), liquid-liquid extraction of plasma samples was carried out using ethyl acetate, and chromatographic separation was carried out on a Titank C18 column (2.1 mm × 50 mm, 3.0 µm) using a gradient mobile phase consisting of 0.1% formic acid and acetonitrile at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Results: PER had good linearity (0.3-600 ng/mL, r >0.999), and the accuracy, precision, recovery rate, and matrix effects (ME) met the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. Compared to the control group, the area under the curve AUC0→t, AUC0→∞, and Cmax of PER in the experimental group decreased by 30.28%, 30.34%, and 46.94%, respectively, and CL increased by 32.08%. Conclusion: ESL could induce the metabolism of PER in rats and decreases plasma exposure to PER. Thus, the concomitant treatment with ESL may require a high dose of PER to achieve the same efficacy.

RESUMO

There is no gold standard for evaluating the severity of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and it is still based on a score. This study aimed to use the metabolomics method to find promised biomarkers in assessing disease severity and potential therapeutic targets for CAP. The result found that the metabolites in the plasma samples of CAP patients had significantly different between the acute phase and the remission phase, especially lysophosphatidylcholine (LPCs) in glycerophospholipids, whose levels are negatively linked to the severity of the disease. Subsequently, the two key metabolites of myristoyl lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC 14:0) and LPC 16:1 were screened. We analyzed the predictive performance of the two metabolites using Spearman-related analysis and ROC curves, and LPC14:0 showed more satisfactory diagnostic performance than LPC16:1. Then we explored the protective role and mechanism of LPC 14:0 in animal and cell models. The results showed that LPC 14:0 could inhibit the LPS-induced secretion of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α, lower the ROS and MDA levels, and decreased the depletion of SOD and GSH, thereby reducing lung tissue and cell damage, such as down-regulating the protein level in BALF, lung W/D ratio, MPO activity, and apoptosis. We found that LPC 14:0 inhibited LPS-induced inflammatory response and oxidative stress, and the above protection was achieved by inhibiting LPS-induced activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. LPC 14:0 may serve as a novel biomarker for predicting the severity of CAP. In addition, our exploration of the role of LPC 14:0 in animal and cellular models has reinforced its promise as a therapeutic target to improve the clinical efficacy for CAP.

RESUMO

Omnidirectional broadband terahertz (THz) antireflection (AR) with an actively configurable coating promises the achievement of next-generation efficient and versatile THz components with high performance. We demonstrate a near-infrared (NIR) light-tunable and omnidirectional broadband THz AR coating based on an impedance matching method and composed of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/graphene composite film. The omnidirectional broadband properties of the active AR coating can be efficiently achieved by tunable NIR optical excitation of less than 0.27 W·cm-2, which exhibits omnidirectional suppression of THz-wave reflection for incidence angles from 0 to 70°, concerning the broadband frequency range of 0.1-3.0 THz, with an ultrafast response time of ∼5 ps. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the active AR coating can improve the performance of a reflectance-tunable THz-wave polarization reflector by the elimination of Fabry-Pérot interference. The NIR irradiance-dependent active AR mechanism of the hybrid system is investigated, which demonstrates the essential role of the PEDOT:PSS/graphene layers in promoting the charge separation at the interface and therefore changing the photoconductivity of the composite film to achieve impedance matching under optical excitation. Several crucial advantages of the proposed and proven concept, including the wide-angle range, broad spectral range, flexible tunability, and easier fabrication, may revolutionize the AR strategy at THz frequencies for a wide range of THz applications.

RESUMO

In this work, the fabrication of the CuO on ZnCdS as a heterojunction nanocomposites were conducted by hydrothermal method and the synthesis method was confirmed by the XRD, XPS, EDS, UV-vis spectrum analysis. The CuO/ZnCdS was used as a photocathode in the bio-photoelectrochemical system (BPES) for tetracycline (TC) degradation under solar irradiation. The CuO/ZnCdS photocathode indicated substantial photocatalytic efficiency for TC degradation, due to the fast separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The ESR test evaluates the mechanism of degradation, and shows that ·OH, and ·O2- were contributed to TC degradation. The TC degradation was 1.59 times higher than the unilluminated process (98.72% vs 61.71). The photocatalysis test shows that the TC was degraded about 90.5% in 1.5 h. Then, the synthesized CuO/ZnCdS nanocomposites were studied for the biological application such as antifungal activities. CuO/ZnCdS nanocomposites depicted substantial antimicrobial activity versus Candida-albicans by in vitro process. Therefore, this study suggests the novel system for the antibiotics degradation, and as antifungal application.

RESUMO

Background: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common types of birth defects. Oral folic acid (FA) prophylaxis is currently available, but the pathogenesis of NTDs is not fully understood. We conducted this study to examine the role of the immune landscape of NTDs and identify novel diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers. Methods: We downloaded the GSE33111 data set of 12 NTD embryos and 12 healthy embryos in the same period of fetal development from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We compared the healthy embryos and NTD embryos to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We also performed a functional enrichment analysis of the DEGs using the clusterProfiler package. We extracted the top 10 ranked genes as hub immune-related biomarkers. We then used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to determine the expression levels of the hub immune-related genes and the accuracy of the diagnosis of NTDs. Finally, we analyzed the immune landscape of the NTD embryos and healthy embryos via a single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA). Results: A total of 611 DEGs were identified by the differential analysis, including 95 immune genes. The functional enrichment analysis indicated that Epstein-Barr virus infection, antigen processing and presentation, inflammatory bowel disease, and type I diabetes mellitus were associated with NTDs. The results of the expression level analysis showed that the hub immune-related genes were more highly expressed in the NTD embryos than the healthy embryos. Additionally, the ROC curve analysis also indicated that the expression levels of the 10 hub immune-related genes were highly accurate in the diagnosis of NTDs [area under the curve (AUC) range, 0.708-0.812]. The immune infiltration analysis demonstrated that 20 of the 28 immune cell types were more highly infiltrated in the NTD embryos than the healthy embryos. Conclusions: Immune-related genes are important regulators of the occurrence and development of NTDs.

RESUMO

The residue of antibiotics in the soil is becoming more and more common, which may affect the normal growth of plants and organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the residues of antibiotics in tea gardens' soil after a long-term application of manure. An ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed to simultaneously determine the residues of 32 antibiotics in the soil of tea gardens after fertilization. The samples were extracted with methanol-acetonitrile and purified with C18 at the same time. Then, mixed dispersive sorbents dispersed in a syringe were used for the second purification. The results showed that the antibiotics have a good linear relationship within the range. The recovery rate is 70.1-120.3%. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by analyzing 30 real samples (with a detection rate of 43.3%). The method is a simple and environmentally friendly method for the analysis of multiple antibiotics in soils, and it could provide a basis for the risk assessment of antibiotics in agricultural environments and the standard application of organic fertilizers in tea gardens.
